Gutter cleaning is vital for home maintenance

Gutters are something that most people completely forget about until they cause problems. And they can indeed do severe damage if they are not maintained regularly. Just a once a year visit by our experts is all it takes to remove that worry and replace it with peace of mind.

Modern gutter cleaning systems are fast and efficient

We use a tool called Skyvac, which is like a very long hoover tube with a U-shaped end bit that stretches from ground level to suck out all the crud in your guttering. It’s fast and efficient, and leaves your gutters free to do the job for which they were intended.

It’s rare that we have to lay ladders against your house and climb up – but we do that when necessary too.

What damage can a blocked gutter cause?

Blocked gutters are not always apparent, although we have recently seen one case where starlings were bathing regularly and splashing water onto the ground, thus alerting the homeowner!

Eventually any clogged gutter will overflow but not necessarily onto the ground. It may simply leak down the outside of the wall undetected. That will eventually find cracks, especially in older brick buildings. Once inside the walls, it will continue to soak through with significant damage and repair costs as a result.

While those may be exceptional cases, they are actual real-life examples.

Sagging gutters are a common result of build-up of detritus, which can ranges from moss and twigs to bird carcases, mud and pieces of broken roof tiles or slates. The excess weight eventually reaches a critical mass that the gutter can no longer support, so it sags, or the supports bend or even fall away.

Many houses typically have very long runs of guttering

Think about the sheer quantity of guttering on many houses. It has been installed not only at roof eaves level but also on porches, extensions and conservatories. It’s simple mathematics that the more guttering you have, the great the probability of blockages occurring.

Gutter cleaning should be added to your regular home maintenance ‘to-do’ list as an annual task.
